Apparently, the supervision of the capital market is something women are trusted with. No sooner was the Julia Wiens personnel announcement published (she is taking over the supervision of insurance companies and pension funds at BaFin) than the next high-profile personnel news followed: Prof. Dr. Claudia Buch, currently vice-president of the Deutsche Bundesbank, will in all likelihood take over as head of ECB banking supervision. After all, the ECB Council nominated her by majority vote on 13 September 2023. Only the EU Parliament and the EU Council still have to give their consent.

According to the report, the macroeconomist will replace the Italian Andrea Enria, who will leave office at the end of 2023 after five years. Buch is expected to become the top banking supervisor from the beginning of 2024. Since 2014, the ECB has been responsible for supervising the major banks in the Eurozone, in Germany for example Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank and DZ Bank. In total, there are 109 financial institutions that fall under the ECB's supervision.

Buch is also a member of the ECB Supervisory Board and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS).

Another candidate for the prestigious post was Margarita Delgado from Spain, who is Vice-President of the Bank of Spain.
