When was the last time you were amazed by the outstanding performance of your endowment or pension insurance? Haha, exactly!
And when was the last time you were pleasantly surprised by a clause hidden somewhere in your insurance terms and conditions? Uh… right. Yawn!
But in fact, insurance policies can surprise you, in a good way. This year, AXA in France hit the mark with its home insurance policy by adding something truly remarkable to its terms and conditions. The policy now covers not only damage caused by fire or water, but also includes six additional words: “…and in cases of domestic violence.”
Domestic violence is now covered
By recognizing domestic violence as an additional insurable event, AXA France acknowledges that a home can become uninhabitable not only due to fire or flooding, but also because of violence within its walls. In such cases, affected individuals can receive support and emergency accommodation.
The media has hailed this clause as female-friendly, but of course, not only women benefit. Men who are victims of domestic violence are equally entitled to coverage. While most cases of intimate partner violence involve women, about 18.9% of cases in 2019 were the other way around, according to Boris von Heesen in his German book "Was Männer kosten".
A campaign praised by the marketing industry
Returning to AXA’s new home insurance policy in France, credit where credit is due. The co-creator of this innovative campaign was the Paris-based agency Publicis Conseil, which received widespread recognition from the marketing industry for its work.
One interesting question remains: could the insurer, in cases of repeated aggressive behavior, eventually exclude certain individuals from coverage? In other words: If you continue living with this person, we can no longer insure against the risk of domestic violence?
